A practical guide for insured patients

Hip and knee procedure code finder

A practical guide from Mr Mohamed Mussa, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon at Precision Joint Clinic. Search insurance procedure codes for hip replacement, knee replacement, revision and injections before discussing authorisation with your insurer.

A code is not an authorisation or a quotation. Codes and insurer requirements can change. Hospital cover, surgeon fees, robotic assistance and any excess must be confirmed separately. A listed code does not mean that a treatment is suitable for you.

Searches procedure names, codes and common terms. Filter below by joint or treatment.

What about robotic surgery or Arthrosamid?

Robotic knee entries in this finder are supported by a dated insurer coding reference and require current confirmation. For robotic hip replacement, ask the secretary for the appropriate code for your insurer and planned operation. There is no universal robotic authorisation for every insurer. Your insurer may request separate information or coding for robotic assistance. Do not use a general injection code to assume Arthrosamid is covered. Ask the secretary to confirm the proposed treatment and coding before contacting your insurer.

Ask Harkeet about a code →

Using your procedure code

  1. Ask your treating team to confirm the planned operation and its code.
  2. Ask your insurer to confirm cover for the procedure, surgeon and hospital, including any excess or shortfall.
  3. Keep your authorisation reference and share it with the hospital and practice secretary before treatment.

Questions about procedure codes

W3712 is listed for a primary total hip replacement. Complex surgery and revision surgery use different codes. Your treating team must confirm the code that describes your planned operation.

What is the procedure code for a knee replacement?

W4210 is listed for a primary total knee replacement and W5200 for a unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement. Complex and revision procedures have separate codes. Confirm the planned procedure with your clinical team.

Does a procedure code confirm insurance cover?

No. Ask your insurer to confirm the proposed procedure, hospital, surgeon, authorisation and any excess or shortfall. Robotic assistance or a particular injection treatment may require additional information.
