W3732: revision hip replacement code
A practical explanation from Mr Mohamed Mussa, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon.
Search all procedure codes →What this code describes
W3732 describes revision of a total hip replacement without the additional reconstructive procedures specified under other codes. It is not a universal code for every repeat hip operation. Major reconstruction, a bearing exchange or staged treatment for infection can change the coding and quotation.
Your clinical team must confirm the planned procedure. Your insurer must confirm authorisation for your surgeon, hospital and treatment.
Questions to ask before treatment
- Which components are being revised?
- Does the plan involve reconstruction or staged infection treatment?
- Will authorisation be needed separately for each planned stage?
Keep your authorisation reference and check any excess, shortfall or separate hospital, imaging and anaesthetic charges. If your treatment plan changes, ask whether authorisation needs updating.
