W9030: image-guided injection or aspiration code
A practical explanation from Mr Mohamed Mussa, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon.
Search all procedure codes →What this code describes
W9030 describes an injection or aspiration using image guidance. Aspiration means removing fluid, whereas an injection delivers a substance. The medicine, site, imaging and purpose still need to be specified when discussing authorisation. This general entry does not establish cover for hyaluronic acid or Arthrosamid.
Your clinical team must confirm the planned procedure. Your insurer must confirm authorisation for your surgeon, hospital and treatment.
Questions to ask before treatment
- Is the procedure an injection, aspiration or both?
- Which medicine and imaging method are planned?
- Are imaging, medication and hospital charges included in my authorisation?
Keep your authorisation reference and check any excess, shortfall or separate hospital, imaging and anaesthetic charges. If your treatment plan changes, ask whether authorisation needs updating.
