W4230: revision knee replacement code
A practical explanation from Mr Mohamed Mussa, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon.
Search all procedure codes →What this code describes
W4230 is the revision total knee replacement entry in this guide. A painful knee replacement does not itself establish the need for revision. Once investigations and the operative plan are complete, the team can distinguish a full revision from a liner exchange, partial replacement revision or a staged procedure for infection.
Your clinical team must confirm the planned procedure. Your insurer must confirm authorisation for your surgeon, hospital and treatment.
Questions to ask before treatment
- Is the plan a revision replacement or a liner exchange?
- Does suspected infection require further investigation or staged surgery?
- Does the insurer need an updated report before authorisation?
Keep your authorisation reference and check any excess, shortfall or separate hospital, imaging and anaesthetic charges. If your treatment plan changes, ask whether authorisation needs updating.
