W5200: partial knee replacement code
A practical explanation from Mr Mohamed Mussa, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon.
Search all procedure codes →What this code describes
W5200 relates to unicompartmental knee replacement, often called partial knee replacement. The choice between partial and total replacement follows clinical assessment; a code search cannot establish suitability. Revision of a partial replacement and conversion to a total replacement are separate procedures.
Your clinical team must confirm the planned procedure. Your insurer must confirm authorisation for your surgeon, hospital and treatment.
Questions to ask before treatment
- Is my planned operation a unicompartmental replacement?
- Will robotic assistance require a separate authorisation discussion?
- Which code should be used if the operative plan changes?
Keep your authorisation reference and check any excess, shortfall or separate hospital, imaging and anaesthetic charges. If your treatment plan changes, ask whether authorisation needs updating.
